    • In 1938 they moved to Holywell Farm, Loftus, Yorkshire. At the time of moving there was a foot & mouth outbreak in the area so they had to get special permission to move the animals - they only had 24 hours to complete it all in. George & his brother Wilf had to bring stuff over on two horse drawn carts walking all the way. They were delayed setting off as the chickens that were being moved escaped before they could be packed into a crate for moving - they had to be recaptured before they could set off. They took a drink & some sandwiches with them which George had on his cart but his cart had the quicker horse & Wilf was soon lagging a couple of miles behind & had therefore become separated from his sandwiches. George was happily walking along beside the horse when overtaken by a boy on bicycle who informed him 'that his mate wanted his sandwiches' so George stopped & waited for Wilf to catch up so they could have some food. It took them about 5 and a half hours to get the stuff from Cragg Farm to Holywell Farm.

    • 'The name 'Foulsyke' derives from Syke meaning stream & foul meaning thick with weedsso it seems to mean a stream thick with weeds but there are two here at Loftus, Near Foulsyke and Far Foulsyke. Both words are of Scandinavian origin so it would seem that tey were named when Danes lived in the area.

Alum workers had grazing rights at Foulsyke & the historian Ord tells us that in 1846 there were 100 men employed at Lofhouse Alum works , each man accommodated with a cottage & cowfall & since alum was only worked 7 months of the year, an alum worker would keep his wife and family by working his bit of land and keeping his cow when he was not at the Alum Works.

There were originally three cottages at Near Foulsyke, now converted to two, built by Lord Zetland in 1869 to house "cow-keepers" even though the Alum Works were closed by then' source Loftus Town Crier April/May 1992
