    • RESCUE AT SALTBURN.
The facts have just leaked out of the meritorious rescue of a girl at Saltburn by a non-swimmer. A young mason named Ernest Ridsdale, of Cat Nab Cottage, was shrimping on the sands on the Brotton side of the Saltburn Beck, when his attention was arrested by the screaming of a girl visitor who was swimming[?]. Some gentlemen who were part of the scene had noticed that the girl was in difficulties, but not being swimmers, they were unable to effect a rescue, though they made every endeavour. Ridsdale, also is not a swimmer, but with the words, "I'll brave it out," he plunged into the water fully dressed, went beyond his depth, and succeed in bringing the exhausted girl to shore. The mother of the girl suitably acknowledged Ridsdale's services on retrieving her safe and sound

Memories of my Grandfather - ERNEST LAKE RIDSDALE
    • Ernest Lake Ridsdale was born at his parent's home at 5 William St., New Skelton, Skelton, North Yorkshire.

One of the little family mysteries which I have solved in doing these researches deals with the Ernest's birth. Ernest was about a year and a half younger than his wife Louise, but, as that was unfashionable, some question existed as to the years of their births. The wrong years are on their headstones! I have a copy of Ernest's birth certifcate, and I have seen the record of Louise's.

Also, we were always given to understand that Ernest was born in the town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea in North Yorkshire. Ernest had a painting of a cottage near Cat Nab Hill in Saltburn which we were led to believe was his birthplace. I own this painting now. Ossie Ridsdale believed that Ernest must have been born in the same house as his father. Ernest's birth certificate confirms Ossie's theory. Ossie also proposed why the confusion may have existed: the postal area for Skelton is and was Saltburn!

      BAPTISM:

Ernest was baptised at the parish church in Skelton when he was one month old.

      CONFIRMATION:

Ernest was probably confirmed at the parish church in Skelton although I do not have any records for it. He told me that when he was confirmed he was required to memorize large parts of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. Even when he was in his 70s, he could recite the Collects from memory.

      IMMIGRATION:

According to what I was told, Ernest came to the U.S. in 1907 for a visit. He returned to England and then emigrated for good in 1909 and settled in Pittsburgh. I found him in the 1910 census working as a butler in Pittsburgh for Mrs. Elizabeth Ellerns of 809 N. Highland Ave. At the time, he gave as his year of immigration as 1906. I have since heard from family in England that the reason he left England concerned some unhappy love affair!

The passenger records that I have found so far give him coming to New York in 1907 and heading to Greenwich, Connecticut.

      MARRIAGE:

He met Louise Korp in Pittsburgh, and they married 28 July 1915 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in East Hampton, Long Island.

I had not found any record of their marriage until very recently (2016) when I found a copy of their Marriage Certificate in some papers from my mother. I had thought that likely it had taken place at the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church on Jennie Lind St. in McKeesport; however,Allegheny County had no record of it. Louise was working for a Pittsburgh family who were summering in East Hampton.

      HOMES:

The Ridsdales first child, John Bulmer Ridsdale, was born on 6 July 1916 and died three days later. I was named in memory of this child.

My mother, Dorothy Louise Ridsdale, was born 7 October 1918, towards the end of World War I. On her birth certificate, the Ridsdales were listed as living at 719 Filbert St. in Pittsburgh. Ernest was listed as an inspector at the aircraft department.

Sometime during this period, Ernest came to the attention of the Mellon family and Andrew Mellon. He worked for the Mellons in Pittsburgh up though 1940 or so. In addition to managing the house, he travelled to Europe with Mr. Mellon or his son Paul on several occasions. On at least one of these trips, he was able to visit his family in England. We have a photograph taken in the late 1920s of Ernest, his brothers William and Arthur and their wives, his sister Mabel, and their father John Robert Ridsdale.

The Ridsdales used to vacation in Atlantic City, New Jersey, throughout their time in Pittsburgh and afterwards in New York. My mother used to hate it. They were forever buying jewelry on these trips. On most occasions, they did not get what they expected. I was given a lovely star sapphire and diamond ring, which they got at an auction there, for an engagement ring for Carolyn. At that time we discovered that the star sapphire was a fake.

About 1940 the Ridsdales moved to New York City and lived at 125 E. 70th St. They lived there until 1950 when they moved to 129 Eastchester Road, New Rochelle, with the Lisles. Eastchester Road was a large two family house and the Ridsdales lived upstairs and the Lisles lived downstairs. The lot was very large with a large garage and a large tool shed. We had gardens and lots of apple trees and a large side yard where my friends and I could play baseball.

About 1953 or so, Ernest's brother Arthur and his wife Jennie visited from England. I remember going with them on the New York Subway to Coney Island Amusement Park for a day. I got sick with the mumps after the visit.

When the Lisles left Eastchester Road for Pelham in September 1956, the Ridsdales took an apartment about half a mile away near the Pelham Country Club. When I was about 12 years old, about 1958 or so, I got interested in my family's history, and it was about this time when I "interviewed" the Ridsdales on their families. I still have these original notes, and they formed my starting point in my research.

About 1963, Ernest had a severe stroke that nearly killed him. After he was hospitalized for some time, it became necessary for him to have regular nursing care. We discovered during this period that Louise was by no means fit enough to provide any care. So the family found a very nice nursing home for them to live in Stamford, Connecticut. Ernest still tried to get about. He had another serious stroke in 1965 after returning from a drive to visit Diane at her school in Connecticut.

Always a gentleman to the end, he died 8 May 1972. He was in bed at the home and asked for some medicine, took it and said that he was going to take a little nap. He died peacefully in that nap.

He was buried in Kensico Cemetery in Vahalla, New York.

I remember that Ernest always maintained his "broad Yorkshire accent". He was a man of somewhat stout build, a bit under 6 feet in height, a full head of gray hair which he combed straight back. He smoked cigarettes, at least up until his stroke in the 1960s.

Ernest enjoyed horse racing. As a younger man, he used to go to the race track every so often. When we lived in the suburbs, he was inclined to read about it in the New York Daily Mirror and place a few bets with a local bookie. Such behaviour did not sit well with my father, the somewhat straight-laced Herb Lisle! He tried to get Ernest to stop, but I do not think he ever did until his stroke.

But Ernest was always the gentleman. I do not think he ever left home without wearing a tie and jacket. He slowed down as he got in his 70s, but I still remember him with vigor.
