19 'The name 'Foulsyke' derives from Syke meaning stream & foul meaning thick with weedsso it seems to mean a stream thick with weeds but there are two here at Loftus, Near Foulsyke and Far Foulsyke. Both words are of Scandinavian origin so it would seem that tey were named when Danes lived in the area.

Alum workers had grazing rights at Foulsyke & the historian Ord tells us that in 1846 there were 100 men employed at Lofhouse Alum works , each man accommodated with a cottage & cowfall & since alum was only worked 7 months of the year, an alum worker would keep his wife and family by working his bit of land and keeping his cow when he was not at the Alum Works.

There were originally three cottages at Near Foulsyke, now converted to two, built by Lord Zetland in 1869 to house "cow-keepers" even though the Alum Works were closed by then' source Loftus Town Crier April/May 1992
